Today’s post is about our favorite 10 best lookout points in the Kruger National Park. Stop at a lookout point or a picnic site to take a break from driving, you might get lucky and have a fantastic sighting at one of the lookouts.
This lookout point I s located on the H7, 17 km from Orpen, you can get out of your car and it gives you the opportunity to overlook the Timbavati river. There are benches you can sit on, so get out and scout out the area with your binoculars. A few years ago two big male lions were seen at this look out point while someone was sitting at a bench.
2. Nkumbe Lookout
It is found on the H10 close to Tshokwane, it is our favorite places to stop and get out of our car. It provides great views over the grassland plains. The lookout point is situated on a high point which allows you to see far across the park. It has a thatched seating area which you can sit and enjoy the view.
3. Mlondozi Dam
is a lookout as well as a picnic spot. It is situated on the S29 near Lower Sabie, it overlooks Mlondozi Dam, water bucks can often be found here drinking.
4. Stevenson Hamilton Memorial Hill Tablet
The memorial is made up of big boulders and you can find it on the S114 close to Renosterkoppies, it is where the ashes of Stevenson Hamilton and his wife were strewn making this his Memorial place. You can get out your car and walk to the boulders you can view the memorial plaques well as view a fantastic over the Kruger.
5. Timbavati Picnic Site
This picnic site I s situated in the central part of the Kruger on the S39, like Mlondozi you are allowed to stop here for a picnic break, this spot over looks the dry riverbank, often leopards are seen in the riverbank, be on the lookout as there is no fence.
6. Mathekenyane Lookou
Mathekenyane Lookout is close to Skukuza, if you drive 11km south from Skukuza rest camp on the H1-1, the lookout is on your left. You will stop at the top of a rocky outcrop which provides great views of the surrounding area.
7. N’wamanzi Lookout
This lookout can be found 9km west from Olifants rest camp, it overlooks the Olifant river. The lookout is a tarred area where cars can park and people can leave their vehicles within the designated area.
8. Pafuri Picnic Site
Pafuri Picnic site is situated close to Pafuri Border Gate far north, you can stop at the picnic spot and enjoy a breakfast or a lunch while looking for rarely seen birds such as broad-billed and racket-tailed rollers here, this area is known for being able to find difficult to spot birds, large herd of elephants can be found here, the picnic site overlooks the Luvuvhu River. After you stop at pafuri picnic site make a stop at Crooks Corner this is where three countries, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Mozambique meet.
9. Orpen Dam
Is located on the S32 sand road near Thsokwane. There is a thatch lookout point with a view of the Dam, hippos can often be found in the water.
10. Ntandanyathi Hide
This Hide is situated near Lower Sabie on the S28 sand road. Ntandanyathi means “where buffalos come to drink”. This lookout made of a wooden structure and it is great if you are into birding, you can view crocodiles, hippos and terrapins in the water as well as other animals that might come enjoy a drink.
